What Is the Mental Strategy in Maths?

Are you looking for tips to explain what it means to use a mental strategy in maths? Here’s a simple way to explain mental maths to your students:

Mental maths is the name we use for the calculations done in your head to solve a maths problem. Instead of using a piece of paper and pencil or pulling out a calculator to help find the answer, in maths mentals, we use only our cognitive abilities to manipulate numbers and find solutions!

There are dozens of different mental strategies and techniques we can use in maths — depending on the operation.

For example, if you are faced with addition sums, you may use the number bonds strategy of mental maths, which involves breaking down numbers into their component parts.

Other maths mental strategies you may use include (but are not limited to!):

  • Cross Cancelling
  • Doubling and Halving
  • Estimating
  • Rounding

Could this resource be altered to enable teachers to select a maths strand or topic to include. For example, only addition up to 3-digit numbers, mixed operations with 2-digit numbers, fractions, time etc.

Hi Amanda! Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have passed on the information to the relevant team. Feel free to check out the Grade 1 option to see if it may be suitable in the meantime. 🙂

Brooke Holmes

The year 6 sheets seem to cut off the last question on each page.

Tom (Teach Starter)

Hi Brooke,
Thank you for letting us know, I will raise this with the team. In the meantime, I have found when you use Comic Sans (everyone’s favourite), the questions are less likely to be cut off at the bottom.
I understand that you are probably using the school fonts based on your state but I hope that helps while we get it fixed.
