- Ordering Australian coins according to their value
- Identifying equivalent values in collections coins and notes
- Calculating the change required for simple transactions.
Virtual Money Manipulatives

Have students demonstrate their ability to represent money values in multiple ways by using the Money Lab’s buckets.
- Set the number of buckets to two, three or four in the settings menu.
- Drag an amount of money into one of the buckets.
- Have students use the currency manipulator to create equivalent amounts in the other buckets using different notes and coins.
Note: The Live Count at the top of each bucket can be switched on and off by tapping the yellow hash button.
Calculate Change
Year 3 and 4 students can calculate the change required when completing a simple transaction by using the Money Lab’s ‘Cost and Change’ theme.
- Select the ‘Cost and Change’ theme in the settings menu.
- Click the purple dollar sign button to generate a random amount on the price tag (the randomised range can be edited in the settings menu).
- Drag an amount of money into the ‘Money Given’ column.
- Have students act as the cashier, dragging the change into the ‘Change’ column.
- Students can then click the ‘Check change’ button to see if the amount of change they offered is correct. (The price tag will animate green if correct or shake red if incorrect allowing them to try again.)

Hi there, I can’t seem to access the cost and change theme in the widget?
Anna O'Brien · Jul 5th, 2022
Hi Anna,
Sorry to hear you are having some trouble accessing the ‘Cost and Change’ theme. It seems to be working for us.
Clicking on the Settings Cog that is positioned in the top right of the screen will bring up a settings menu.
From there you can select the ‘Cost and Change’ theme using the drop-down menu. (It displays as ‘None’ by default).
Hope that helps! If you still are having technical issues, please don’t hesitate to send an email to [email protected] and we will be able to assist you further!

The cost and change widget does not work as per above.
Libby Spencer · May 22nd, 2022
Hi Libby,
Thank you for getting in touch! The links I added in the description have decided to stop automatically applying the ‘Cost and Change’ theme to the widget. I have removed these links for now while we go bug smooshing.
The good news is that the ‘Cost and Change’ theme still works within the widget. All you have to do is click the Settings cog in the top right corner of the widget and change the theme in the menu that pops up. I hope that helps! If you need any additional assistance, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Hi, this is a great resource but I can’t seem to find the ‘purple dollar sign’ button in the Cost and Change theme…
Larni E · May 15th, 2022
Hi there Larni, thanks for reaching out. The purple dollar sign can be located in the bottom right corner of the screen, just underneath the green ‘Check Change’ button. If you continue to experience difficulties, please contact our Customer Support Team at [email protected] – we are more than happy to help you through it!

this is great, is there a way to asign a widget to students for remote learning.
Leonie Ripper · Oct 12th, 2021
Hi Leonie, thanks so much for the kind words! At this juncture, premium widgets are linked to premium subscriber accounts only, so there is no way for students to use widgets remotely. If you would like to suggest the idea of shared widgets to the team, please click here: https://www.teachstarter.com/suggest-a-resource/?resource_type=resource
